There's no doubt about it, domaining can be a very lucrative business endeavor for anyone who has some foresight and creativity. Domainers mine language with an eye toward current and future trends to come up with words or combination of words that have not yet been registered as domain names on the World Wide Web.

Understanding domains is crucial to being successful in this type of business venture, and the failure to do so can result in costly missed opportunities.

First of all, when domaining it is important to realize that there are many generic top level domains available online, and you will need to not only purchase your intended name but to purchase additional names that may be lucrative as well. For example, if your targeted domain name to register is CompanyName.com, you must not register just companyname.com, you must also reserve CompanyName.net, CompanyName.org, companyname.biz. By doing this, the remaining versions of the name will not be available to anyone else and you will in essence have a monopoly on the domains. If however, you find that your intended names, in this case, versions of companyname (CompanyName.net or CompanyName.org) are unavailable, you must not give up. You can offer to purchase these domain names from other domainers or owners if you foresee them being worth more than you originally paid for them.

One must realize, however that to make good money as a domainer, one must be innovative and creative. You must have a knack for thinking outside the box and choosing lucrative domains before others. If you don't, your income will be severely limited. Also important to successful domaining, is keeping in mind that spelling and formatting tends to vary from person to person. For example, CompanyName.com may be entered incorrectly as Company-Name.com, or misspelled as CompaneyName.com by many people. If a domainer has not taken this into account, then he or she will miss out on the opportunity to take advantage of these kinds of common user mistakes.

In addition, to be successful at domaining, one must be analytical and able to think critically and creatively about what is popular now and what may be popular in the future. The ability to predict a trend is an invaluable asset to a domainer because it means that he or she can scoop up domain names long before anyone else realizes their potential. It may also be helpful to look at previous trends keeping in mind that many trends and fads are cyclical. What is not popular now may become hugely popular again under the right circumstances. Nostalgia in general is also a helpful thing to consider when searching for domains to buy because even if something doesn't become trendy again in the future, there will always be people who fondly remember it and seek it out online.

In conclusion, being a successful domainer means more than simply choosing the best domain name, it means being a task oriented, prolific, creative and analytical thinker that is able to choose trendy domain names that could very well turn out to be the next hottest domain name that will garnish a huge profit on the domains auction block. Good luck.
