Setting up your own domain name or registering your own domain is a straightforward process. Finding a suitable domain name may prove more difficult, but it is worth spending the time and effort, after all it is your presence on the web either for you personally or for your business. When you register your domain name it usually gives you exclusivity on that name for one to two years, depending on the options you select or that are offered. To register your name, go to an official Internet registrar on line. A good place to start would be ICC AN dot org and search for registrars. Enter the name or phrase of the domain name you would like to register. Follow the rules regarding name length and format. Some sites also give you alternative suggestions, a useful tool if you need some more inspiration. Search for your name, if its not available try some alternatives, be quite inventive and you will eventually get one you like. Go ahead and register the name following the on line instructions. Pay your fee on line or any other method that suits and is available. Top Tips Have a list of names before you visit the website to register. Unusual or quirky names are usually more likely to be available. If you really want a domain name that someone else has already taken, you can contact the registrant/owner and offer to buy it. Important note on privacy As you're registering your name, you will/should be presented with the option of keeping your domain name private - a deluxe feature you'll probably want to take advantage of. A private domain registration will keep your personal information (name, email address, etc.) out of the global Internet database, and will prevent a lot of spam emails reaching your in box. Selecting the privacy options is not mandatory and will not block all spam, its generally recommend you select this option. I automatically select this option when registering a new domain name. This can cost extra, but is worth it.
