So, you've created your blog/landing page for your business. You written with passion about a subject for the niche market you are targeting.

It should provide a very interesting reading experience for the community of your chosen niche as opposed to another piece of worthless advertising.

However, no matter how good your content is and how informative and helpful you've made it, if there is nobody to read it then you can't profit/benefit from your efforts. Traffic is the lifeblood of your website/blog. In order to attract people you must offer attractive information for them.

To get the traffic to your site you have to think backwards. For my internet business I started by thinking where would I look to find this kind of information. The answer in most cases is simple - people use search engines. Google, Yahoo, MSN to name but a few. These are the portals that bring people to your site. For people to find your site on a search engine, however, you need to rank high on the results page for that particular search. When you rank high in the search results you will start to benefit from a natural click through of leads to your website.

The skill of getting your site to rank highly in search engines is called SEO or Search Engine Optimization. It is a very complex and tricky art to master but don't be put off learning some of the basic techniques. We are not going to get you page ranked number one on searches such as "work from home", but with time and effort it becomes more realistic to achieve a page one placing for more unique niche keywords related to your main topic.

So, let's use the example of guitars. You want to optimize your site for the subject "guitars" but on looking there is far too many page results for that simple term. As of writing there were 30,500,000 results on a search of "guitars". No 1 position....I don't think so, not unless you have heaps of money, time and skill to throw at it!

Now let's explore a more niche niche market in this field. A similar search using the keyword "vintage electric guitar" throws up just under 30,000 page results. Now we're talking. With some correct methods and procedures, getting on to page one or even position one is not so unrealistic.

First, pay attention to the web address for your site. Is your niche keyword mentioned in the site address? Secondly, have you used the keyword in your title to your site. Changing the title to your site is much easier than changing your URL if you have already chosen and purchased one.

Look at your individual page headings. Have you used your keyword in the

tags? These are the tags that tell the search engines what your page is about. Learning a little HTML helps which is where the time and effort comes into play.

Finally, does the keyword come up in the content of your articles/blogs/page script? A few careful mentions of your keyword in the main body of your page will let the search engines know that you page/site is indeed relevant to the search term.

Remember, this is real life. Your sites/articles must be interesting and not just spam. People aren't interested in reading pages full of keyword after keyword. With my internet business I try to keep my content as informative as possible to capture my readers to keep bringing them back or ideally subscribe to my blog feeds or simply bookmark my site. Keep in mind...! Write for humans, not just search engines.
